The Duty of the US Government Regarding the Events in Egypt, and When the Dying Begins

Feb 09, 2011 12:17

It is the purpose and duty of the United States government, with regard to foreign affairs, to attempt to "influence" foreign governments, organizations and individuals in a manner consistent with the interests and welfare of the people of the United States of America. Period.

This may be to the benefit of the people of said foreign countries: ( Read more... )

The Iranian regime has subsequently attacked Iraq and the United States following the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003-04

Uhmmm... when did the Iranian regime attack the United States?

following the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003-04; developed ballistic missiles

Iran's ballistic missile program started during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980's.

Iran supported, and still does support, insurgents in Iraq. While we were involved in combat operations in Iraq, this was an attack on both American and allied forces and civilians. Now that we are only peripherally involved in combat operations in Iraq, this is mostly just an attack on allied forces and civilians.

That's just after the fall of Saddam, mind you. The first serious attack by the Islamic Republic of Iran on the United States of America took place in 1979: I refer, of course, to the Hostage Crisis itself. There were also some famous attacks by Iranian forces and Iranian-backed groups on American targets in the 1980's -- do you want me to find you a list of them?

I'm well aware that the Iranian ballistic missile program started in the 1980's. The semicolon in my statement was intended to introduce an entirely new clause -- I was not claiming that the development of ballistic missiles was in direct response to the second US-Iraqi War.

President Reagan had our military destroy the Iranian Navy (for what it was at the time) twice during his term as well as strike various Iranian Military Land based facilities and they did with 100% sucess.

Yes, we did. After Iran or Iranian-backed groups attacked American forces, specifically US Marines in Lebanon and US-flagged tankers in the Persian Gulf.

Were you replying to a specific person on livejournal?

I too, fear islamicization of former allies and fear it is a matter of years before another war with Israel.

"years" is optimistic. I'm thinking 'months' to 'within the next year or two.'

When the revolt in Iran against the Shah began, it started in the streets, it started off moderate. But the Shah turned machine guns on them. The longer the revolt against the Shah lasted, the more radical it became. Thus, the longer the Egyptian situation takes to resolve itself, the more radical their revolution might become, and the less democratic the result might be ( ... )

Why is it in the US interests to pay off Arab regimes to keep Israel safe?

Actually, Israel is a pain in the ass and the US should rap them on the knuckles concerning certian issues, but since I don't see the US passing an immigration law allowing them to all come here, protecting them there is a matter of guilt for not protecting them in Europe.

In fact, as anti-Semitism rises in Europe *and* the U.S., the flow of Jewish refugees is going in the opposite direction. In Israel they may be under threat of attack from the neighboring countries, but at least they aren't being personally threatened by their next-door neighbors.
