That is almost certainly not what NASA Administrator Charles Bolden thought he was saying when he explained, in an interview with Al Jazeera (*) reported by Fox News ("NASA Chief: Next Frontier Better Relations With Muslim World",

Without the efforts of several governments, we wouldn't have developed space travel as rapidly as we did. One thing that governments do accomplish fairly well is exploration, and it is even within minarchist limits ("scouting" is a clear component of "national defense").
Yes, it's a good thing that commercial spaceflight is finally starting, but it's not a good thing if we give up on NASA. And make no mistake about it, a NASA whose main job is to duplicate the efforts of the Education and State Departments is not going to survive for long.
Because other kleptocracies have 'space' programs we at least need Nasa as a figurehead but they will never give us space.
I'm expecting some of the more boisterous Asian countries will. Though we may not like the results we're stuck with out risk aversion meme for the foreseeable future.
Well, there actually was an age of Muslim science. Short-lived, mostly derivative of Greek and Indian work, and it was ultimately crushed under the weight of Muslim theology, but it was real.
It has absolutely nothing to do with any function of NASA, though, save insofar as it was part of the general advance of medieval science that paved the way for the later Scientific Revolution.
Actually, the names of the brighter stars in the sky all come from arab astronomers and are still in use today. Astronomy largely started with the Arabs. But this was also LONG before the current Islamic religion was born (around 600AD as I recall). Today, the radicals would probably do the same thing to their own science as they did to the Library of Alexandria.
I would be very surprised if Obama wins a second term. Then again, I was shocked by the lassitude of the Republican campaign of 1996 which let Clinton win a second term -- inexcusable, given that Clinton had committed outright crimes in office.
Well, you are right that it does not look good right now for Obama, not at all. And, he just keeps doing weirder things. Like this, it is actually WEIRD.
So, hopefully, people will remain energized to defeat him. They appear to be energized now, since this type of thing is just so -- again, weird and ridiculous and bad for the country.
If NASA's mission has changed from one of exploration and discovery to feel-good nonsense, it should be dismantled. This is so distressing and disappointing.

I really hope this guy doesn't get elected twice, because we are in bigger trouble than I would have imagined.

I'm in 100% agreement with you. I also blogged on this nonsense.
