When even a wishy-washy president like Obama calls releasing this animal a mistake, you KNOW you've screwed up.

Good heavens, I don't know what is wrong with this world lately!

This REALLY pisses me off! The bastard should have been executed. Since he was in Europe, though, that was impossible, since they don't have the death penalty. He should have been locked in solitary for the rest of his life ( ... )

We also need to make sure that the country has plans to launch a strike against us to avoid international condemnation.

The Lockerbie bombing was an act of war. One problem was that both we and the British chose to treat it merely as a "crime."

Re: Not to get too far off the topic, but regarding China... jordan179 August 22 2009, 20:55:18 UTC
You're quite right regarding China. There is this tendency to imagine an economically-stable China and an unstable America dependent on China, but the situation is close to the reverse. America is politically-stable and has broad-based trade; China is potentially very politically unstable, and has invested very heavily in America -- and consequently cannot afford to seriously anger us.

El-Megrahi was shown a degree of compassion, that he did not show to his victims. He was sent home because he has terminal prostrate cancer and his condition deteriorated recently. He's expected to die within months.

The Libyan government was given a chance to redeem itself in the eyes of the West. Looks like FAIL.

Unless meaningful consequences are imposed by America and Britain on Libya, looks like SUCCEED to me. Libya is essentially going "Yeah. We murdered over 200 of your people. And you just blinked. Weak!"

And the Third World is listening.

Do you hear that velociraptor?

"PREY IS WEAK! PREY IS WEAK! KILL AND EAT! KILL AND EAT! KILL! KILL! KILL! KILL! KILL! KILL!"

THAT is how a predator thinks.
Whether from the jungles of Jurassic park or the deserts of Arabia.

I'm not so sure about the "We murdered ..." bit. Megrahi seems to be seen as an innocent victim of a miscarriage of justice, just as the sanctions against Libya are seen to be unfair. Not that I agree with these opinions.
