Well, for apartments, we had pretty firm requirements:
A 10 minute commute to Microsoft during normal commute times (or possibly a longer commute but on a bus line)
Three bedroom, or two bedroom and an office area (den, office nook, whatever)
Price less than or equal to 1.5*our Austin apartment
Bikeable or walkable to "stuff", where "stuff" is somewhat loosely defined, but generally means I could get to a grocery store without requiring a car
Houses have similar requirements, although we're willing to do house payments of much higher than 1.5*our Austin rent and we're looking at 3 and 4 bedrooms. We're also trying to find a compromise between Jeff's love of space and my aversion to having a house that I deem to be "too big" (a concept that seems extremely bizarre to Jeff :-).
