I think its great you are strong enough to seek full closure on that part of your history. It shows you have changed, and he has changed, and at least - you have moved on, that much we know for sure. Sometimes in life all we need is a little closure on things or reassurance that no matter how bad things got with someone in your past, you can still be cordial and yes, sometimes, even care about their general health in various ways. That shows that you no longer blame or hold a big grudge against him, which is a huge sign of personal growth. I found my FIRST boyfriend (from back in 93!) on myspace, he added me back, and emailed me saying "wow, you are so cute! lets talk." and i replied "good to see you're still alive and off of drugs. keep in touch." to which i never heard a reply (same sitch as you, kinda) and yes, i am very okay with it. He treated me badly but I don't wish him any personal harm, and i hope he does love and go on with his life like i have. Even though the circumstances were really bad back then, I learned many things
