so as much time as i spend following baseball i don't always feel i have a good grasp of every nuance. from where i sat the shift seemed kind of cheesy, especially because it was driven by analytics. it also seemed contrary to the design of the positions and layout on the diamond. but i didn't pay attention to that sort of thing when i watched as a youth, either, so i definitely am not attaching any superiority to my view. i also like the idea that it may allow for more base hits so there isn't as much pull toward the all-or-nothing approach of out or out of the ballpark.
what i definitely don't like, as cool as the term of art is, are the ghost runners in extra innings. getting on base is pretty tough -- no one gets a free pass!
I hate the ghost runners. Baseball used to be a game whose simplicity required great tactical subtlety. Now it’s getting to be a combo of football and basketball. I love basketball but baseball used to be a very different game.
