i never watched this movie as a kid. granted, i wasn't even alive when the movie first came out, but since it's so popular, most people my generation still see it when they're quite young... so I saw it for the first time while i was in high school and I hated it... SO MUCH. the fact that it's SO popular and hyped up by everyone it only made my hate for it that much more. I just don't understand why people like it. I'm a huge fan of musicals too and I think Grease is an insult to its genre. Horrible music, horrible story, horrible characters... just... HORRIBLE.
supposedly back in the day, woman were expected to be "sweet and pure" like Sandy, so the fact that she became what she was(the opposite of what was considered 'proper' for a woman), was supposed to be some kind of challenge to societal norms. nowadays, most people completely miss that point... but that only means that it was either bad writing or just a lame message. I think it was both.
so the fact that she became what she was(the opposite of what was considered 'proper' for a woman), was supposed to be some kind of challenge to societal norms.
Oooooooooooooooooooh! *smacks head* Doh! Oh, now I get it. I feel pretty dumb I didn't notice that--I guess I should have. But I take comfort in your comment that most other people don't notice that either. Thanks for pointing that out.
Still, I don't like it. And I don't see why this film is still so popular, more than three decades later. And I swear, I just cannot remember why I liked it at age 10. I must have seen something in it at the time that appealed to me as a kid, but for the life of me I cannot tell you what.
You know, its funny. After years of talking smack, I just saw Grease for the first time a while ago, and had to admit that I kind of liked it. God only knows why.
