The Kristina Wrap-up.

Apr 06, 2015 08:16

I feel like I've talked about Kris way too much on FB, so this is just for old, trusted friends.  I don't want to wallow in the mud.  At some point I need to move on ( Read more... )

I was checking out rents in the area near Nike Europe HQ, and they're really cheap. A two-bedroom might not be a bad idea. I want people to come visit.

I would have to file US taxes. There is a foreign tax credit and an income exclusion so the actual taxes would be pretty low compared to what someone living in the US would pay. Also, the tax rate in The Netherlands is pretty high, but there's a 30% exclusion for skilled positions (I think I'd have to make over $60k/year).

I really, really hate dating. I know most people think it's exciting,...

What? Who? Where are these people that think it's fun and exciting? I'm pretty sure most people don't like it any more than you do. ;)

I followed what was going on on FB, and the way I see it...

1.) Kris acts her age, which is not surprising and doesn't make her a bad person.
2.) I'm confused why there was so much emphasis put on her inability to speak English well. I mean...couldn't you also learn Russian?
3.) Yay, you got some good traveling in! Go forth and have more adventures in Portland and otherwise. :)

Ok good, I'm not alone in hating dating. lol

You're right, and I don't think Kris is a bad person. She did buy me a hat when I forgot mine, and she got up at 4:30am to get me to the airport.

I did start to learn Russian! I think the point where I thought Kris was serious was when she asked me to move to Russia. Up to that point I thought she was using me to get to the US. But yes, I was willing to learn Russian and move there if it came down to it (but Yulia and I were going to keep working on her moving to the US).

Thank you!

Good deal! I wonder if it was her maturity level that put the skids on everything. Aw well.

Yeah, I think so. She didn't put much thought into what it would be like and put us both in a tough position.

I respect you for going and I do think you grew from the experience.

Maybe you can find a group on meetup that would help you practice Dutch.

Thank you! And like I said, I think I found something else on the trip.

That's a good idea! But I just did a search for "Dutch" in the Portland group and didn't find anything. But I found some expat meetup groups in Amsterdam I could hang out with.

Long time no talk. All journeys are a revelation in one form or another. I'm sorry your trip didn't work out, but it appears that enlightenment was gained regardless. Best of luck in Amsterdam! :)
