This was sweet. I was so sad when the Doctor didn't save the day, but then, I guess you can't always save the day. And letting Jack put her back together again was heartbreakingly lovely.

This is a nice, nice fic.

It's funny - the idea of her not saving the day sort of crept up on me. I went in intending for her to pull it off and save the city, but by the time I was done, I realized she hadn't. I was as surprised and sad as you were.

I like that about Doctor Who, really. That even though the Doctor's a hero, the day is not always saved. And a lot of times it's not even saveable. In a lot of the new who canon the Doctor fails to save the day just to give him something to angst about, but I think in this fic it worked out a lot more sweet and organically.
