I've was first introduced to Tesla coils at a sci-fi convention when I was a child, and since then have though of Tesla as a pretty cool dude. The movie The Prestige and various stories of his eccentricity only helped further this impression. His autobiography solidified my opinion

I have to say, I had never heard of Tesla coils till I saw one in action at one of my husbands friends houses. I'm not talking one of the tiny ones either...thing was probably 15 feet tall and sending sparks EVERYWHERE. It scared the crap out of me but it was so cool to see!!!
