Too damned awesome. It was like a dance. I like that better than any eastern swordplay I've seen.

That's what I'm saying! There was a little bit of it in Kingdom of Heaven, but if they could make some really interesting fight scenes if they played up these kind of techniques more.

Western swordfighting (especially medieval, as opposed to later styles like rapier fencing) gets a bum rap as being nothing but hack and bash. Don't get me wrong though, I love Japanese swordwork too. Eastern, western, it's all good.

The techniques where they grab the blade with one hand are call "half sword" techniques. There are even some moves found in medieval fighting manuals where you grab the blade with BOTH hands and swing the hilt! (I'm not a practitioner, at least not yet, but I've been doing some reading about it)
