I’ve just finished the first week of my new job. I think it’s going pretty well. I might have more to say about that later, but it doesn’t seem to be at the top of my priority list right now ( Read more... )

I like the way you think about things. I always look forward to reading your posts because I think that the way you think is refreshing. I personally get too caught up with insignificant things, but you seem to look at the bigger picture and I like that. I hope you keep posting about what's going on with you.

you know, that's fairly apropos, for a couple of reasons.

first, i made a conscious effort to focus on the big picture for this particular post. spending time with my older relatives made me think that way.

second, it is my lack of focusing on the big picture that got me into this mess. well, that and not really knowing how to fix this stuff, until recently.

I'm glad I was able to notice it. Sometimes making the effort and somebody noticing is more important that the making of the effort in the first place :)

I try to scout things out before going to a place at an appointed time. It's just too frustrating otherwise (especially if taking the bus). Google maps and streetview certainly make it a lot easier now.

It's amazing how stable the previous generation of people seems to be. Or is it that the unstable ones have vanished? Could be a warning there. Know any unstable elders who have lasted a long time? Or perhaps we never see them living their lives since they're not at one spot all the time.

One other thing, most of these stable jobs seem to be government ones - they may not pay much but there's always a good pension. How do they do that? And what happens when the government goes bust after running deficits to pay for its generosity, like Greece? How's California doing?

Meanwhile over here things are back to boom times; we're looking for a few more coders and artists at work. But since it's a small company, having one or two contracts more than usual makes it seem way busier. Better than layoffs, but I could still use some time off in the summer!

it is a bit disheartening, isn't it? i bet i'm making more right now than my uncle ever did. but if you factor in the pension, he's probably doing better over the long haul. plus the fact that he didn't have to move all the time, chasing opportunities.

but really, i know i'm not suited for that life. no way in hell would i have lasted for three decades at a government job. so i guess i have to just take the opportunities as they come and make my own pension.
