In June 2003, I got on a plane to America with the intention of paying off my outstanding tax debt and returning to Tel Aviv within a year or so. Almost 5 years, 30 pounds, one new family, and a huge lesson learned later, I finally paid every dime of over $10,000 in overdue taxes.
