You've got to go quite a bit further south before iced tea is, by default, sweet. Of course, adding sugar to ice-cold tea is pointless as it doesn't dissolve very well so you have to ask for some hot water (as if you were having hot tea), sugar the hell out of it and add that to the iced tea.

The funny thing is that at the time I thought something completely different had happened with the gin and tonic.

I thought you'd spilt a totally different drink, red wine or something, onto your shirt, and then poured the tonic water over it to 'take out the stain' thinking that either a) it was soda water or b) tonic water would work like soda water.
