Telemarketers

I was woken up this morning by my mobile phone. I glanced at the caller ID, and since I was half-asleep I thought it was someone from work, but it was actually 01204 384100. When I answered, the caller introduced himself as Wayne (?) from Bolton, which is slightly odd: that's a city, not a company. He then asked whether I'd had any bank charges in ( Read more... )

If you don't want phone spam, sign up to the government "don't spam these numbers" list here. Anyone who calls you after that, you just say "Have you heard of the telephone preference service?", and they get scared, say sorry, hang up, and never bother you again.

Your experience of the list is different to mine when they say "This company isn't a member of that organisation"...

Presumably people must buy from cold calling otherwise people wouldn't do it. The mind boggles doesn't it.

"It is a legal requirement for telemarketers not to call a TPS subscribed number after it has been registered for 28 days." - from the TPS website. This applies to calls from the UK or on behalf of a UK-based company.
They can call you if you have an existing relationship with the company (e.g. previous customer), at which point you can request to be removed from the list.

If you are on TPS and get calls, you can complain to the Information Commissioner.
