Meat!

One for the meat eaters here. Well, vegetarians are also welcome to vote/comment, but I can probably guess what you're going to say :)

Over on my main website, I've explained my reasons for going vegetarian. In particular, I realised that I had a double standard, where I didn't like the idea of eating things that were cute and fluffy (specifically ( Read more... )

I have eaten dog, while I was in Tibet. It looked like, and had the texture of, the sort of tough lamb you get in bad Indian restaurants.

I didn't order it, before anyone asks, it came as part of the only meal they served, a buffet on one of those roundabouts in the middle of a table.

It wasn't particularly unpleasant, just a little chewy.

I never found out what breed it was, probably not a pedigree though.

as bob says, most comments i've suggest they don't taste very good, most carnivores don't. I'll happily eat deer, duck or kangaroo though.

I'm happy to be inconsistent. Not that I particularly care much about cats and dogs, but I wouldn't eat them for the same reason Muslims won't eat pork: it just seems disgusting and unnatural. Since I've been eating cows, pigs etc since before my opinions formed, it's perfectly natural and normal to me to do so.

The way I see it, to be human is to be inconsistent. There are some areas where I believe it's right to fight this (countering sexism and racism, for example), and others where I really don't care (such as this example, or the fact that I'm only likely to pick up hitchhikers if they're obviously climbers). This is itself an inconsistency, and I don't care about it either. :-)

I like to think I take a more or less consistent approach with food (if not with anything else). I will try anything once as long as it doesn't involve mayonnaise and it doesn't look at me while I am trying to eat it. That means that I would (given the opportunity) try most things, haggis I quite like so bad example, but I would try eyeballs if called upon to do so, or (as in a book I was reading recently) bulls testicles if it would be rude not to.

That doesn't mean that I don't think "eww" at the idea, but then there are lots of foods where I choose not to think about the contents, anything pre-packaged for a start (flavour enhancers etc, eww).
