hamlet review

Hey everyone!

As I went to see Hamlet yesterday, I thought a small review wouldn't go amiss.

I have to say I enjoyed myself a great deal! John was absolutely amazing and gripping and sexy and, well, basically everything you would expect of someone like him.
All in all, the production, though, has a few let downs though, luckily, none of them take away any of the brilliance that is John's performance.

I can only compare this Hamlet to the David Tennant version and a rather weird German version I saw a couple of years ago, but still, I can compare!
What I liked most about his Hamlet was the sarcasm and how his Hamlet was a bit darker, more edgy and gritty than the ones I have seen so far - absolutely convincing and brilliant. His movements never seemed forced or repetitive and there was a lot of emotion and melody to his voice.

Obviously, from an utter fangirl point of view it was highly satisfactory as well. I mean, come on. He wears a suit, he has a sword (aka lots of hip action xD) an he is very active on stage so ... oh you can't not look.

Some of the things that I liked less was Claudius. I wasn't sure what John Nettles was trying to do with the character but I have to say it did not work. A lot of flailing about with his arms, inaudible mumblings and ... I don't know. For some reason, his portrayal of the Ghost was very interesting and good.
As well as Claudius, I wasn't all that fond of Ophelia but I have to say, I haven't liked her once, in any Hamlet performance that I saw and I am beginning to detect I simply dislike the character.

But those were the only real problems I had with the play. Everything else was captivating, fun, moving and great!

Thanks, Mr. Simm, for an entertaining evening!
