Meandering aimlessly is an important military tactic. (Open)

Striding through the doors of his quarters, John slung his gun over his shoulder, the strap fitting snugly against his chest. He knew he didn't need the BFG on the Enterprise, but he felt safer with its comforting mass resting between his shoulder blades. Besides, it never hurt to be prepared ( Read more... )

He was running way too fast down the corridor, and if Lenny's momma saw him she would have smacked him, but he was out on his own, heading to see Joanna. As he turned the corner he ran head long into a wall of man. Bouncing off, he landed on his ass on the ground.

"...ouch."

John's eyes widened as he looked down at the little boy.

Ohcrap.

"You're Lenny, right little dude?" he asked, getting down on one knee and extending a hand to help the boy up. He smiled weakly.

Whatdoyouthinkyou'redoing?You'reterriblewithkids.

He gulped as his brain continued to process the situation. This wasn't just any kid.

His smile slipped a little.

"...yeah," he said, taking the hand and pulling himself up. "You're Uncle John right?" he asked, rubbing his hip. His eyes were immediately drawn to the huge gun John was carrying.

"Wow..."

"Yup! That's me.... Uncle John." He tried to stretch his sorry excuse for a grin into something a little more cheery with limited success. "You okay there, little dude? Looks like you hurt your hip."

He noticed Lenny's interest but ignored it. No kid should be exposed to guns in a fun way. They weren't toys and they certainly weren't cool.

John was especially determined to keep Lenny from coveting weapons, as his older self was the better version of John. If Leonard grew up with a taste for violence...

Yeah, it was strange. Between his resemblance to his Daddy and Joanna's last name, Uncle John was definitely a McCoy too, despite what his momma had told him.

"I'm okay," he said, looking up at the other man. "Joanna said you taught people how to fight, is that true?" he asked, furrowing his forehead.

John rolled his eyes. Trust a kid not to be led off track for even a second.

"Well, I teach people how to defend themselves, if that's what you mean. But that's a lot different than fighting. Fighting implies that you are the aggressor, whereas defense lacks the offensive moves that make up fighting." He paused and frowned.

And this was why he was not a kindergarten teacher.

Lenny caught the "I teach" part, and that's all he really needed. "You teach kids, sir?" he asked, cocking an eyebrow at his relative.

"Yeah," John sighed, realizing that he'd lost this battle. "I teach kids. But cut it out with the 'sirs', y'hear Lenny? It's John."

"...John," he repeated, gave him a little smile. "Well, I got this friend, and I think maybe you could help him? Maybe?"

Biting his bottom lip, he looked down, not wanting to tattle or nothin' but he didn't want Jimmy hurt. He was so little. "I think someone's bullying him."

John nodded, serious. "Bullying's bad busniness. And I probably could help him. But you've got to understand..." he trailed off, frustrated.

How could he explain to this child, medical genius that he would become, that whatever he taught his friend could give the kid the tools he needed to fight back? How could he tell Lenny that, after this kid got tired of being picked on, he would pick fights of his own?

"Look, little dude. I'm no psychologist but I'm pretty sure that just learning to defend himself isn't going to cut it." He scrubbed a hand over his face, sighing. He had trouble enough explaining himself to adults, how could he explain himself to a child?

"Fine. I'll help. Who's this friend of yours?"

Lenny smile widened, as if he was relieved at this news. "His name's Jimmy. He's just a kid, but he's scared, cause I think he's pushed around. Isn't there some trick you can show him, even though he's smaller, that'll make bigger people leave'm alone?"

John froze.

Of course it would be the captain. Of course.

"...Sure. I'll teach him some moves and sets." John's stomach churned as he thought of Kirk, a man he respected, a man he'd taken advantage of, as a child.

A defenseless child.

"Where can we find this kid?"

Lenny frowned. "I know where his room is, if you wanna come look with me! He don't got a communicator, on account he's just six, but I keep wanderin' off, so my momma made me take this," he shook his little device, "so she can find me when she needs me."

"He lives on deck five. Wanna go now? You busy?"

"Free as a bird, little dude. Lead on."

John hoped that this would end well, without him losing it. He had a sneaking suspicion that it was a vain hope.

Lenny led John the corridor, heading toward the turbo lift. It wasn't that hard to find your way around the ship, once you figured some simple stuff out.

"Deck five," he said loudly as they entered the turbo lift. He looked up at John, and gave him a little smile.

"You seem to know your way around," John teased, smiling down at Lenny. "How'd you get the ship figured out so fast? I still have trouble without the computer's help."
