Eating in the dark...

Dunc and I have just returned from the Prague restaurant 'Under the Wing of Darkness' - advertised as the next in series of 'dark restuarants' to crop up throughout Europe. The concept is simple enough: A typical restaurant serves typical restaurant meals, but the setting is one of complete and utter darkness. The first of its kind opened in ( Read more... )

Sounds fascinating.

It'd be easy (and cheap) to recreate a similar effect just by turning out the lights at a dinner party in a suitably enclosed space. You wouldn't get anything approaching the full theatrical experience you describe above, but you'd get the gist.

I think the only issue would be serving... the food would be prepared in the light, but you'd need an "airlock" or something to serve the food, otherwise opening the door would lead to light coming though.

or... you could just tell everyone to look away for a second ;) hehe. I thought it'd be really fun for wine night too, where there are a whole selection and now that we've tried a whole bunch, we should be able to discern what grape it is. Plus food, of course. :)

What a fascinating place and a great description!

2. I realised that so much of my life I am, to some degree, conscious of the fact that people may be looking at me. And so, when there played some particular music that I enjoyed, I swayed around and danced in my seat a little, without any fear of ridicule. At one point I licked my plate just because I could. And because I wanted to. So why not? No one was watching, anyhow.

A great observation.

Thanks Bec! Yes, this 'revelation' in particular was actually an enormous one for me and since then I have tried to be more 'free' and less worried about the discerning public eye. I have always envied people like this, so I'm going to try to do something about it! :)

Fantastic... think I'll have to try replicating it and find out if those other senses are heightened.

Strangely enough, I thought that my hearing would improve, but it actually made conversation so much more difficult. I didn't realise how much attention I pay to someone's facial movements, and there are even times when I subconsciously lip-read. It was noticable that people in the restaurant were all talking to each other much louder than they would otherwise. So interesting!
