Just ran into this and... yes and yes. I have spent a lifetime not belonging, first as an outsider in my own town, in my own culture. These days I hang out with some lovely people, some of whom are really good friends but I still feel like I don't entirely belong to any of those groups. Maybe it is a more common thing than I thought when I was a kid and it may be that this is why people so readily accept the faith of their fathers, the colours of the local football club and political party -we do have a need to belong to a tribe and I never wholly do. Bit of a bind but we plod on, I s'pose.
