Have you heard any of the pieces by Chinese composers trained in the west such as 'The Butterfly Lovers' and the 'Yellow River Concerto'? The combination is startlingly beautiful :o)
I've not heard them. Contrariwise, I tried to listen to John Adams's Nixon in China-but found it unlistenable.
I was a big fan of Brian Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy). It was inspired by a set of postcards with scenes from a Red Chinese opera by that title. Will that count?
"Purple Bamboo" originally comes from Shanghai opera, though it has long since become a popular piece in general, among non-opera fans as well.
