Yay! PA did it's best too! What does *sic semper tyrannis* mean literally? I'm guessing something like *down with tyrants* but I like to get my Latin right.

I think it's what John Wilkes Booth cried out after he shot Lincoln. It means "thus always to Tyrants."

Your translation is right. I hesitated to quote it because of the unsavory historical associations. Tim McVeigh used it too.

But it's right there on the state seal and belongs to all citizens of Virginia. The design originated in the American Revolution and it invokes the Goddess. This seems like the right time to reclaim it for a good cause.

Indeed. I spent a year in Virginia as a kid and that was one of the few bits of latin I learned there. {:)
