That's the one... it was first published in 1902... I learned to play it as a thirteen-year-old during the Scott Joplin revival. I thought Treemonisha was fascinating... about a woman born to freed slaves in rural Arkansas who leads her people to education and enlightenment. She survives an assassination attempt.

I had no idea what the song meant in 1977. All I know is that I must have liked it because my parents bought me the album. I thought it sucked.
