This is a very old traditional folk song. It is a song in praise of Allah (God), asking him to do his will but refrain from bringing suffering upon anyone. Although it is a very simple song, the lyrics are highly appropriate for the times in which we find ourselves. that's beautiful :)

at first I thought it was Spanish, because sometimes my ear has trouble distinguishing Arabic and Spanish, but oh how I love it! It reminds me of al-Andalus!

The Andalusian feel must have come from the ‘ûd which is not a Hindustani instrument. They keep innovating like that. This music's intention is to bridge cultures.

Have you ever heard musiqa andalusiyah played on the ‘ûd? It's like Arabized flamenco, it still sounds very Spanish, it's become absorbed into North African and Egyptian Arab classical music.

I heard it sung by the woman I'm with, who is a native Urdu speaker from India... it's an old familiar song in India, sort of like "This Land Is Your Land"

could you possibly get her to translate it for you? I adore this song. something about "those who make garlands of lies..." - I found a partial translation on a blog ages ago, but now I can't find it. I came across your LJ looking. thanks for posting the video =)
