Just a side question - do you find FF13 as challenging as I do? I definitely die a lot, especially on those Eidolon battles, but even on a few random battles too. But then again, this is the first time I've ever played any Final Fantasy game the first time through without a guide. All I did was search for some guide as to what's missable (some accessories shouldn't be sold?) and that was it.
The answer is they should continue to do both. I play different games depending on my mood. Sometimes I just want to kick back and enjoy a cinematic game that requires little thinking. Other times I really want to get involved with the gameplay and explore every nook and cranny
And if developers find that their superfluous content might not be played.. well that's where achievements and bonus missions are well suited.
"When I was a kid, this was fine. I'd have a single game to play at a time, and I wanted to get the most out of it. I would play Zelda for a solid few hours, not having any idea what to do. I'd wander and check every bush or rock. I'd try to climb into every waterfall. Nowadays, I feel like I'm incredibly impatient with games. I want to get in, finish the game, and start another one. I could only assume that a large portion of gamers feel the same
