I think last weekend's events shocked many of us for the same reasons you wrote. It seems that we've all felt a bit of comfort in recent years that we were okay and accepted, and this reminded us that dangers still lurk.
I, too, feel that we've (LGBTQ) have let our wider "presence" lull us in to thinking we were past the worst of it. Like others, the shooting shocked me as well and served as a reminder that while we need to be visible, and speak our truths, that there is also the need for vigilance.
May we all (the human race) move beyond such expressions one day...
