so as many of you know, my great triumph of yesterday was finally getting a "real" cell phone with t-mobile. the bad news is, i get zero reception in my house, and only one bar, and at that not even continuously, out in the yard. supposedly i live in a three-bar neighborhood, so i'm seriously effing annoyed about this. naturally i get three bars ( Read more... )

cell providers will usually try to work with you to help out with this--checking to make sure repeaters in your area are properly working, some times offering to swap you to try a different version of the same model phone. not being able to get reception in your own home is one of the easiest ways to get out of a cell phone contract, so they don't want you to have that means available to you if they can help it.

thanks tony. actually they didn't say a thing and made no effort to check anything or do anything other than cancel the phone number transfer request. not sure if that's good or bad really, but it is extremely important that i don't lose my phone number, particularly in the next couple weeks. most of my friends have t-mobile and at least two or three have gotten reception at my place so not sure what gives. but whatever. back to the drawing board. my current plan is a pay as you go, but at least i get three bars in my bedroom.

You do have something like 20 days after signing the contract to back out.

We've had significant variations in reception depending on the phone. I know it will suck taking them up on the need to return it (hopefully within "change of heart" grace period), and losing time with a phone, and all the red tape, but at least it's possible.
