Wind farms

I wanted to take an opportunity to respond to some of the more usual complaints against wind farms, generally found in newspaper letters pages, and here is as good a place as any.

Absolutely. I love wandering round wind farms. It's like walking through a Pink Floyd album sleeve.
I also agree with the rest of your post. Best serious posting I've read here in a while.

A few quick points:

Nuclear, coal, gas and oil power stations rarely get above efficiencies of 40%, yet we never hear that in the press.

Energy diversity is absolutely crucial if we are to secure a constant power supply for the future. Obviously, the aim is to get to a stage where energy is sustainable (i.e. irreplaceable material is not converted to power), but I think this is many decades off yet. This means a mix of popular and unpopular sources of power.

The grid will have to adapt to the new power sources. I don't know how, or why or when. That's the crux really, there are no easy answers. If there were, then we would have implemented them painlessly long before now.
