Chapter 10: Trial and Error

Jin heard it, but just barely. It was the faintest of shouts, one that would have slipped by him unnoticed if it hadn't been so quiet at the moment. He placed the voice too, but refused to believe it was really him; it had to be a trick. Maybe the Ringmaster was back and messing with him, trying to get him to break all the quicker by making him hear the voices of his friends.

If this was the case, then Ringmaster was even more demented than Jin thought. Was all of this suffering not enough? Did he really have to endure the sounds of his friends calling out to him, too? It was almost too much. Jin tried to ignore the voice that was calling out to him, but it didn't seem to do much.

No matter how hard he tried, Jin could still hear his name being called. Insane, I'm going insane. People lose their minds when faced with death. I must be doing the same, he thought to himself. Yet, even with this logic still fresh on his mind, he couldn't help but ask, "Do you hear that?"

The ghost that shared the tent with Jin looked down at him, his translucent face a mask of confusion. "Hear what?" the specter asked. Jin groaned as he forced his weakened body to roll from his back to his right side. "A voice, a male voice," he said hoarsely.

Ryo raised one of his ghostly eyebrows, then closed his eyes as he tried to listen. A second later, his eyes opened and he said, "Yeah, now that you mention it, I hear something, too." Jin felt his previous doubts about his sanity fade away; if Ryo heard it as well, then was there a possibility that it was real? Jin shivered as a little bit more of his life was drained from him.

The only upside was at least he was no longer screaming in pain. At least, for the time being. Ryo floated outside of the magical cage that Jin was trapped in and said, "It sounds like the voice is coming from outside of the tent. I can pass through the wall and see if that's the case."

Jin didn't say anything; he was too weak to be wasting his words on such menial responses. The specter then slid through the wall of the tent and vanished. And not a moment later, Ryo returned, but this time, not by himself.

Kame hit and tugged at the outside of the tent, hoping to maybe tear loose a piece of the fabric and make himself a door. Sadly, this didn't work out how he had wanted it to. It upset him to know that he was so close to saving Jin and the only thing keeping him from doing so was the wall of a circus tent.

His temper flared at one point, and he kicked the tent wall out of frustration. "Damn it! Stupid tent!!" he shouted with another kick. He then placed his forehead against the wall of the tent.. So close, he thought to himself, I'm so close to helping him!

Inside the tent, Kame could just barely hear the sounds of mumbled words. Although, he couldn't make out anything that was being said. It didn't matter, though. What did matter was the fact that he could still hear Jin on the other side, which meant that he was still alive.

"Who are you?" a voice suddenly asked to him. Kame gasped and jumped back in surprise. He then turned to see who was talking to him and felt his blood run cold. Floating in front of him was a translucent, pale white figure; a ghost. He wasn't a terrifying ghost, though.

In fact, Kame thought that when he was alive, he might have been rather attractive. Seeing the specter didn't bother when compared to all of the other crazy stuff that had happened thus far. "I'm….I'm Kazuya." The ghost floated closer to him and narrowed his eyes.

"Alright, Kazuya, what is somebody like you doing trapped here in the Nether?" he asked. Kame pressed his back against the tent wall behind him to try and put some distance between him and the ghost. However, the specter only seemed to get closer and closer the further he moved away. "I-I was put here by the Ringmaster. He said s-something about me being a threat to him," he explained.

Kame wasn't sure if that was a good enough explanation, but it would have to do. The ghost cocked an eyebrow and said, "A threat to Ringmaster? Never thought I'd see the day." Behind him, through the tent, Kame heard Jin again. He motioned to the tent behind him and quickly asked the ghost, "Do you know anyway that I can get inside this tent? I believe my friend is inside, and if he is, then he needs help."

The ghost seemed intrigued by this. He held out his translucent hand and said, "I can get you inside the tent, but I'm making no promises that you can help your friend." For some reason, those words made Kame uncomfortable. What if he couldn't help Jin once he got inside?

He then began to weigh the options. If he stayed outside of the tent, then there definitely was no chance of him helping Jin. If he went inside, then there was a slight chance that he could do something. With his mind made up, Kame reached out and took the ghost's hand.

Rather then his own hand slipping through his, like he expected, it turned the same translucent color as his. Before he knew it, his whole body had turned into that of a specter. Kame gasped in surprise and was about to say something, but didn't get the chance before the ghost pulled him along through the wall of the tent.

Kame passed through the fabric with no problem, and when he was inside of the tent, the ghost let go of him, returning him to solid state. Gravity also worked in this tent and he fell to the ground with a thud. The ghost floated in front of him and asked, "Is this who you were looking for?" Kame looked beyond the specter and found a cage made of a dark mist, and inside of this cage was Jin.

Kame felt his eyes grow wide, and before he even knew it, he was running to the cage. "Jin!" He knelt down in front of the base of the structure and looked over him. Jin was pale, and dark circles lined his eyes. Not to mention that it looked like he might have lost a couple of pounds.

"What happened to you?" Kame asked. He tried to keep his voice from wavering, but he knew that he was failing. Jin glanced up at him, his eyes glazed over and almost lifeless, and said weakly, "Ringmaster…." That was all Kame needed to hear or, rather, wanted to hear. But even though he didn't want to know the details as to why Jin was locked away and on the brink of death, the ghost must have thought otherwise.

He floated beside him and said, "He's right. The Ringmaster is responsible for this. You see, the Ringmaster has to find a new form every so often if he's to continue living, and your friend just so happened to fit the qualifications. The cage he's locked in is draining his life away and sending it to Ringmaster. Soon, your friend will be dead and Ringmaster will be able to live for several more decades."

Kame shook his head in disbelief; to think that something so dark and sinister was going on behind the scenes of the circus was almost too much to comprehend. "I've got to get him out of this cage before it's too late," he muttered to himself. Kame began to reach out and grab hold of one of the magical cage bars when Jin;s voice stopped him. "No, don't do that," he said hoarsely, "The cage will hurt you if you touch it."

Kame drew his hand back, then thought of something; he had somehow broken Ringmaster's mind control back during the main show. Maybe he could get around his magic here as well. Ignoring Jin's warning, Kame reached out and took hold of a cage bar. Burning energy traveled up his arm and throughout his body.

He cried out not only from the sheer surprise of it, but also from the pain that followed; it was like being stabbed by hundreds of needles. He couldn't take the pain of it anymore and released the cage. Kame fell back onto the ground and clutched his hand tightly, which was burned to a pinkish color.

Jin, who had forced himself to sit up, looked at him and said breathlessly, "I told you…..not to do that." Kame adverted his eyes from him, unable to look at him after the foolish thing he had just done; grabbing hold of the cage could have killed him.

The ghost then spoke up and said, "Hey, hey, not so fast. He might have done something." Kame glanced at the specter and asked in a shaky voice, "Yeah, like what? Burn myself?" The ghost shook his head and told him, "No, something else. I noticed in the split second before you let go, the cage vanished."

Ringmaster stood before the mirror in his person tent, marveling over his new appearance; it was certainly one of the more attractive ones he had had in his lifetime. He leaned in closer to the mirror, inspecting the skin of his face for any signs of early wear and tear.

It was a good thing to do, seeing as one time, many years ago, he had obtained a new form that began to deteriorate right after the transformation was completed. Luckily, there were no signs of early aging on this form yet, and Ringmaster felt that this one would last him many, many years.

Comfortable with the way this new form was holding up, he walked away from the mirror and over to his wardrobe. Even though there were no more shows he had to perform in that night, he wished to change into something more reasonable and less extravagant for when he walked around the grounds of his circus the rest of the night. But just as he reached out to open the wardrobe, he gasped for air and stumbled back.

Ringmaster clutched tightly to his chest, which had suddenly become tight. Blood pounded in his ears to the point of almost being deafening. Then, just as suddenly as it happened, the episode stopped. Ringmaster wobbled and grabbed onto the side of the wardrobe for balance.

His vision swam for a few seconds before finally coming into focus. "What the hell was that?" he wondered out loud. He tried to reason as to why he would have been overcome by such weakness, and as he pondered, it occurred to him; something must have happened to the magic cage that imprisoned his new body.

If there was a disruption in the flow of energy, then it was very possible that Ringmaster could have felt it. He narrowed his eyes and growled, "I was hoping I wouldn't have to return to the Nether anymore tonight. Looks like I might have been mistaken."
