Thanks, Rosa. I just browsed a stock photo place, bought some pictures and fiddled in photoshop. If I'd been patient enough to wait for my husband to do it when his crunch period was over, I'd probably have a slicker journal, but it was fun doing it myself.
For the CSS, I just grabbed the source of flexible squares (if you view source on your lj, there's a line for the CSS stylesheet, pop that into your browser, copy it and you have a template to alter), the layout I liked, added my images and changed some colors. I kept changing things until I hit the right line for what I wanted. my husband found some errors I made already, but I haven't fixed them yet and they don't show so yay for trial and error!
