This seems to be a staggeringly useful concept. Or perhaps more accurately, a fantastic articulation of how I usually operate instinctively, and why I get so damned frustrated when people bitch without proposing an alternative solution ( Read more... )

That's interesting -- as I look at it it's the way B & A & I have done business for years, we just never had a name for it.

This has two problems. One is the problem of someone who has lower standards. You don't need to have much lower standards to end up not being the one who does the work. And this already comes up a lot with groups of people and is a common source of unfair chore division.

The second is the case of someone who truly is more knowledgeable but less physically able. I may have a good reason to know why something shouldn't be done a particular way, but if I cannot do the task, I'm not even allowed to share my knowledge. I'd have to sit down, shut up, and wait a couple months until the situation becomes critical from a problem I anticipated.

It's a great solution though for things like where to eat or what to do for the evening.

I agree with the lower standards problem. Right now, I'm usually the first one to notice that something is a mess or needs to be done in the house. And this happens for just about anything that's been left undone. If this system were followed, I'd be doing ALL the housework, all the time.

And that's not happening, because we've agreed to what I do and what he does, so there's less suffering involved. If (for instance) the dishes need to be done, I'll tell Marc about it, and he knows it's his job, so he'll get on that. I just usually notice first because they're in my way when I'm cooking.
