Toting up what I did in 2014

BooksWell, the reading of traditionally published fiction and non-fiction was not great.  Librarything.com tells me that I read 32 books, with 8 of those being the installments of Meljean Brook's Kraken King serial.  The favorite by far was Cary Elwes's memoir of the filming of The Princess Bride.  Brook's Heart of Steel was maybe the best fiction ( Read more... )

apropos of nothing, oh life it's bigger, miscellanea, sports, travel

I LOVED China Beach!!!!!

I'm on AO3 too (same username as here), though as a spectator rather than author (though I do have a one-shot fic my friends are urging me to post that I'll get around to someday).

I'm jmcbks there. The little bit of fic I wrote was (is) on a different LJ account solely for fic in that comm; it used to be unlocked but then there was a fandom-specific brouhaha and comms and fic were locked. I need to just move everything and then post a general note to see AO3.

asimplechord is such a life ruiner, lol. I'm glad she dragged you into hockey too though! I'm technically in the Capitals area, which actually works for me b/c it means very few of my Hurricanes games get blacked out, lol. (Still, I've complained more than once that I'm closer to Raleigh than NoVa and thus the Canes should be my home team!)

I'm planning on Pittsburgh in the fall for WinCon. :) I've never actually been to Pittsburgh other than driving friend!Amy's little sister back there once at the beginning of the school term. Friend!Amy is talking about moving back there when Cliff's Navy term is up, and Ronnie is all about that because he thinks it means he can visit her and go to Pens games. (Though, really, it's SO MUCH CHEAPER for us to just go see the Pens when they play in Raleigh.)

I find geographic restrictions to be weird. But okay, cable providers, go ahead and draw random lines to divide your territory.

I was only there long enough to go to hockey games and Primanti's (much better at Market Square than in the arena). And to the Carnegie Museum of Art, which was nice :) I saw a post about WinCon and was tempted but I didn't really feel fannish enough to attempt it.

Tickets for Pens games at Consol are ridiculously expensive. Compared even to the full ticket price of the Caps, they are more.

I went to the first WinCon in 2006 and LOVED IT, and every year I say I'm going back, but most years I decided to go to TX for concerts instead. But this year I'm doing WinCon, lol. Though I also have a TX trip planned for hockey.
