This book came to my attention when Doug blogged about it for SB Day. I checked a copy out of the library, and requested copies of the articles linked in the book review through my local library’s periodicals department. My take on the book is very much in line with Dutton's review for the Washington Post Book World.

This month's Harper's has a fine piece on primate sexual behavior (Harper's, April 2006, Readings: A Natural History of Peace by Robert Sapolsky). As you may know, bonobos (once known as 'pygmy chimpanzees') fuck like rabbits. Unlike regular chimps, they'll have sex for any reason and for no reason at all. From Sapolsky's piece: "Bonobos have sex in every conceivable position and some inconceivable ones, in pairs and groups, between genders and within genders, to greet each other and to resolve conflicts, to work off steam after a predator scare, to celebrate finding food or to cajole its sharing, or just because ( ... )

The recommendation of MBO was fine -- it certainly made me think about how I process the stuff I read, even if it wasn't a stellar book. Plus, it came with a warning via Dutton's review, so it was *Reader Beware* from start to finish.

Damn bonobos, I'll have to go find a copy of Harper's. Thanks for the heads up!
