Holiday reading

The holiday weekend in books: not very felicitous.

1. Down Home Zombie Blues by Linnea Sinclair. CBA --> DNF. Which is a shame because I’m sure this is a good book.

2. Under the Rose: An Ivy League Novel by Diana Peterfreund. C. I didn’t hear much about this follow up to Peterfreund’s debut, which was promoted all over the place. No budget? Or was ( Read more... )

Sarah and Malloy are STILL at it? I've only read a couple of those books and enjoyed the setting (naturally) but got tired of that.

It's all about how he's trying to solve her husband's murder and wants her to be safe and out of his world. And how they should keep away from each other because they are from different social classes. Except she seems to blend into his world fairly well.

eh, that was me again. Kate Rothwell.
I'm rereading some Pratchetts because I read them before I got the whole disk world thing.

I also gave away my favorite sappy Christmas book ever (Diane Farr's Once Upon a Christmas) and have to get another copy.

I'm afraid Down Home Zombie might be a DNF for me too. I read the first 2/3 and then got distracted by something else, and I just have no inclination to pick it up again. I'm still trying to figure out why this one did nothing for me when I've enjoyed her other books.

And I researched the pb of the Wedding Officer--Amazon has a mmpb listed for on sale in May. I didn't see a trade version (except the British). And I saw on Capella's website that it's been optioned for a movie. Which doesn't necessarily mean there'll be a movie, but still pretty cool.

I didn't get quite as far into the book as you did, Jennie, but that was pretty much the same thing that happened to me. Put it aside to wrap presents and just haven't felt the urge to pick it up again.

Oh, I would love to see a movie version of The Wedding Officer.

I wondered this myself. When her debut came out, I was so sick of hearing about it that I knew I was never gonna buy it, regardless of how good the reviews were, and to be fair, the reviews seemed to be lukewarm at best.(apart from the ones that her fellow author friends wrote.)

It just goes to show, you can promote the hell outta of a book, (she was even on TV for cripes sakes) but the book still has to be good.

I know it's not necessarily an indication of success, but did dhe make any of the lists?

I had assumed not -- if the first book had made it, wouldn't there have been a blurb on the cover of the second book? But she seems to have gotten a lot of mileage out of the debut -- quotes from the Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, etc. And it must've done well enough to merit some kind of contract, because a third book in the series is slated for release some time in 2008. There was an ad in the back of the 2nd book for it.

I always thought she'd had a three-book contract in the first place. I could be wrong though.

Yes, she seemed to get a lot of love from everywhere, but I put it down to the fact that she was aesthetically marketable.
