I often found when SV tried to be funny, the results were heavy-handed and (IMO) awful (Persuasion, Spirit, Escape). But Bryan Q. Miller wrote some sweet funny moments - like memory-less Clark driving Chloe (played by Erica) crazy in "Hex".

I guess overall my favourite humourous episodes are Heat, Run, & Transference (although there's some dark moments in the latter.)

I agree, although Spirit has grown on me. I usually hate situations that seem to exist for the sole purpose of having someone act out of character, but Annette really committed to the La La scene. My problem with most of the intentionally 'funny' episodes is that they're awfully light on plot (esp Escape), so I might laugh a bit but am left feeling cheated. And the more I think about it, the worse they get because the writers have the characters do SUCH stupid things to set up the 'humour'.

Any specific moments to record for Heat, Run and Transference? My memories are getting a bit fuzzy right now - time for a rewatch!

For Transference, Lionel in Clark's body checking himself out in the mirror, Martha telling him to put out the fire with his hands and his disgust/amusement in the barn scene with Lana 'this one' Lang. And I find the scene where Clark in Lionel's body is trying to convince Martha that he's her 'special boy' unintentionally funny.

I find Heat funny all the way through but Clark's reaction when Lex turns up at school and walks past him to go to Desiree was amusing, as were all the scenes of Clark & Desiree in a power struggle over Lex. Also loved Jonathan taking Clark out to the field to work out his hormones on a scarecrow, then Clark accidentally popping the popcorn.

In Transference, apart from the moments you mention, I love Lionel turning up at the high school and trolling everyone. And Tom's Gloveresque delivery of "Being in that prison, it upset me." is so perfect.

In Run, Bart flirting with Chloe is so cute and his teasing of Clark is very charming.

"(And Clark needed a little longer to be Prom Queen.)"

"Crown's mine, bitch!" :-P

...and then he bitchslaps Chloe so hard, she should have broken every darned bone in her face!

For funniest season, I chose Season 4 because of all the witchy shyte. And Clark's awful dancing in Spell takes the biscuit for me.

There's this moment at 00:20 where KK looks at AM and laughs, almost off-script, at TW's cringe-worthy dancing (which I understand was totally put on for the character, as TW is reportedly good with his fancy footwork) :-)

I love that scene! And the commentary for the episode is hysterical.

I think Tasabian wrote my reply.

The show didn't do well when it was trying to be funny and that's all on the writers, because the actors could be pretty good at comedy. (Although Fortune was so bad, I don't think the actors did a very good job with it either)

I preferred to laugh AT the show as opposed to laugh WITH it. There were some hysterical moments that were trying to be dramatic. And then there were some leaps in logic I just couldn't make. Like in Red when Chloe's complaining about the worthless meteor rocks in the rings. Of course magical colorful crystals that fell from the sky and can only be found in one part of the world are gonna be worth less than rubies. NOT.

*snicker* 'It's worthless, I tell you, worthless' - thus spake Lionel Luthor in an attempt to corner the market. And somehow, everyone believed him.

Yeah, Smallville could do lighthearted pretty well and there were some good lines and banter here and there. But when they tried to make a whole episode light, they just couldn't pull it off.

Definitely seconding Clark's "dancing" and Lionel-in-Clark checking himself out.

I liked the gradual addition of some of the Justice League members, like AC and Vic, because they added some campy humor. For example, Justice, where we have lines like, "Put a shirt on" followed by "You're lucky I'm wearing pants" and poor AC lamenting "All I get are fish jokes." I love that episode in general, honestly.

Oh, good ones. And there was some really funny banter in one of the later episodes - Society? - between Ollie and Hawkman. I'll have to look that one up.

In that vein, I'd like to nominate the delightfully HoYaylicious Aqua and two distinct instances from the same scene:

1. The Oh-So-Gay part where Clark flips the sprinkler on a hitherto dehydrated AC. Alan Ritchson (?) went to TOWN shuddering and gritting his teeth as he was dramatically breaking out of his bonds, all the while shaking his hair in slow motion like a male model in a Davidoff perfume ad. My siblings and I were rolling on the floor, howling with laughter. Still can't believe TPTB managed to sneak in a golden shower scene on primetime family TV. ;-)

Which leads right to the second hilariously camp moment of the episode:

2. "Wet'n'Ready, Bro! :-D

...yeah, y'all get it. :-P

They're all coming back to me now:

Brainiac to Clark: Lying to you is like lying to a mollusc. ~ouch!~
