I'm going through Smallville withdrawal so started rewatching my S1 DVDs for comfort. It was such a different show back then - IMO no better than S10, certainly no worse, just different

ITA! Although I wonder just how Clark inspired Greg, since the last we saw of him, he'd dissolved into a swarm of bugs. I need fic to explain how Greg got himself back together!
Great choices! I love Cassandra, esp. since she was played by the legendary Jackie Burroughs! And Tony Todd was fantastic as Earl: believably scary but also sympathetic.
My favourite was Kyle Tippett ("Hug") because of how Clark reaches out to him when others won't. Also liked Invisible Boy from Shimmer, because he was so jealous of Clex.
Smallville did a consistently great job in casting but seldom better than for Cassandra. She was magnificent. The way she delivered the line about seeing so much pain until Clark appeared... chills baby!
And I can't believe I forgot about Kyle! My bad - he's one of my favourites too.
Kyle Tippett (Hug) was my favorite S1 FOTW. I just really liked the actor, and the interactions he had with Clark. It doesn't hurt that I think Hug is one of S1's best eps.
I love S1 better then any other season. I've never had a problem with the FOTW, because they were always connected to Clark, and Clark often was quite heroic in dealing with them. I also thought the early seasons of SV just had a heart and soul that the later seasons were sorely lacking. S1 always makes me feel warm and fuzzy. The later seasons leave me cold.
Oops, I left off Kyle because he wasn't in my data table as the antagonist and I forgot to look in the other columns. I agree that Hug is a great episode, just below X-Ray IMO. Even more so than Hourglass, Hug shows that choosing to abuse powers is a choice, not destiny. And yes, it's great to see Clark inspiring others to change, even way back then.
I know what you mean about the warmth in S1. I credit that to a clearer vision for what the show was about and the lack of mythology elements - the latter because the show could never make up its mind about how to deal with its own continuity. And the show seemingly came to relish putting Clark into no-win situations, and punished him for doing the right thing. And overall, the lack of consistent characterization - later seasons could be so bewildering! But I still love the later seasons, esp S9.
I totally agree with you with Earl Jenkins. And you are so right about the tone it set for the whole series. Luthorcorp was always the big bad and it was something that Clark couldn't really defeat in the end.
LuthorCorp is really the perfect foe for Superman because its so hard to fight something that can hide so easily behind the wall of plausible deniability. That's one of the reasons I wish they'd done a journalism arc in S10 to show how Clark could fight with his words and not just his strength.
I always thought Leech was one of their best early episodes with Eric Summers showing a really heroic side of Clark. I still love when Eric asks what would you do if you had these powers, and Clark responds with "I'd stop people like you". Aww, season 1 Clark was so sweet and earnest
Leech is one of my favorites too. So many great moments with Clark all relaxed and happy for a while, while Eric's story shows an all too realistic progression from good guy to villain for someone with that type of power at his fingertips.
You know, I'd swear that "stop people like you" line was in the pilot, but, oops, not so! It is a great line.
