singapore observations: a running series

Jun 01, 2007 20:25

23. A young Indian boy on the train this morning, sitting perfectly still and staring at the passengers around him as if searing the scene onto the backs of his retinas. His large eyes are striking, and somehow wise; when he turns his attention on me, it's as if he knows me, and is imploring me to remember him. Unsettled by the intensity of his gaze, I turn away.

24. Two statuesque Malay women walking through the large foyer of Raffles City Mall, dressed to the elevens, gorgeous, hair flowing as if an invisible fan precedes their steps. Their unadulterated happiness, manifesting in a visible glow from their dark skin, makes me smile involuntarily as they pass by.

25. After a sudden rain shower, metal grates and sewer plates become as slippery as if sprayed with cooking oil, gleaming as they dry, enticing the unobservant pedestrian to step upon them and perform an intricate series of contortions in order to prevent bodily harm. With the result that one's back muscles are wrenched and twisted and will require massage and bed rest to heal.
