I had written this to kind of bridge things (back when the Rose/Mickey chat was in 32)--and also to kind of illustrate what was going on with the team, since so much of the story away from the station focuses on Rose and Peter. Once the chapters got rejiggered, this no longer fit...but it still felt wrong to leave it behind.
So--I'm glad you enjoyed it! Penny and James are as dear to me as Peter and Rose, and it's been wonderful to see folks embracing both of them :) Mickey...well...he's loyal to a fault. And while I feel bad for making him so pig-headed, I could totally see him doing it!
Peter had muttered something about having other plans after the daily meeting, and so it had been Penny, Jake, James, and Mickey who’d gone to the pub for a quick pint.
And we thought Peter coming in to the interrogation room with Rose was awkward? Can you imagine what it would've been like if Peter had gone out with the guys?
Mickey spoke up. “Your boss was a right git.”
Oh, you weren't fecking there. Shut up, Fox News.
Penington looked surprised at the vehement statement, and Jake chimed in. “Rose told him some stuff, and he, ah, didn’t react well.”
“That’s an understatement,” James muttered as he took a sip from his glass.
Thank you, Jake and James.
Penington looked confused. “But...I thought...” He stopped and considered his words. “The Inspector’s stopped snacking

NOBODY expects the DI to stop eating.... I'll come in again.
I'm going to print this out and hang it on my wall at work. Hysterically funny.
This would be assuming Penny has much experience with Carlisle's moods beyond disdain and cynicism.
Poor Penny. I imagine that he has, simply through extended exposure to the DI. Carlisle's good at keeping things bottled up, but even he was bound to slip up--briefly--every now and again.
Maybe she figured Mickey would try to talk her out of it, and she was afraid she might listen and take the easy way out?
Maybe she didn't want to have to try to talk him down (from attacking Peter) while she was supposed to be driving? ;)
On a Monday, Penny? Go you!
You've seen the picture. I'd say: no shock there.
One wonders if the reason James is usually the direct contact with the locals is partly because Rose has put her foot in it a few times, so he's got direct experience with cleaning up after her occasional mistakes.Hmmm. Or because

It probably also helps that Penny seems to be more generally clueful than Blythe.

I can just see it now: Mickey? Mickey? No, Mickey, you're not going over there. No, you're not looking up his address. Stop it.

Any of the people I've visualized? Not a huge surprise.
Hmmm. Or because he's one of those annoying people who is innately diplomatic. ;)
Fair enough.
Changing locations tends to be pretty handy for that--so I reckon they either trotted over to a chippy, or one of the numerous little restaurants in the town centre.Apparently we need like little tourist brochures for Kendal

Just a bit. Well, when I say a bit, I mean a lot. ;)

Hmm. It doesn't completely do justice to the place, but the Kendal page at Visit Cumbria has some nice pictures and a pretty good history and description of the town....
And blessings on your head (and the rest of you - I've just unpacked a whole box of blessings) for giving us this little bit in the longer stretches between chapters!!
Enjoy your three-day weekend - and sleep in on Monday morning and post the chapter a little later!
Thank you, thank you, for all you've given us thus far. I now have a proper teapot (housewarming gift from monkeybard), all my books out and accessible, and spiced apple cider. And in less than two days, I'll have another chapter.

I dearly hope I do--I was up bright and early again this morning, though, so things don't look too promising on the sleeping-in front. :/
I'm so glad to hear the unpacking is going well! That's always the hardest part, I think; but then, I hate unpacking. Cider, though? That sounds divine.

This cracked me up. Peter? Turning down food and being NICE? Something is rotten in the town of Kendal.
