Well, I didn't wish that flashback on Elias, but it was a close enough call I wasn't surprised to see it. It's all very good that right now he's got Ruby there to see him through it (and I mean that, it's good that he does), but no matter what we know of future stories his reality is that he might not always. And it wasn't really even work that did it, just a stupid car accident. That's a reminder that anyone would struggle with.

Exactly. There is a great deal of uncertainty in their lives, just as a function of their jobs. And they're both fine with that, in a general sense, and have learned to basically not acknowledge it. So to be reminded that things could change so *quickly* is, of course, quite a shock.

An absolutely delightful read. It's so impressive that you've developed these characters that just take on a life of their own. Well done!

Thank you! It really wasn't my intention at all, when I first wrote Elias in, but then, well...they wouldn't be confined to their little corner of the 'verse! ;)

Poor Elias. How badly does this end up affecting him?

Lovely story (as usual). :)

How badly does this end up affecting him?

As with all of the other bad things he's survived, Elias learned to compartmentalize the memories away. But it will still pop up in a flashback--not frequently, but a few times--when he's not expecting it.

And of course it takes him a little while to be able to look impassively at car accidents again.

Sigh. This has been such a great story. Eli's fear reminded me so much of Peter's when Rose was missing. Now I want to go back and reread the chapter where they show up to comfort him...

This has been such a great story.

Thank you.

*nods* They're very similar.
