Jake, James, and Mickey had taken it upon themselves to provide entertainment with dinner, each eager to help distract Rose from the afternoon’s events. She hadn’t told Jake or James any of the specifics-rehashing them with Mickey had been exhausting enough-but she had shared out the fact that she and Carlisle had had a row. Rose figured it wouldn’

As we know from careful observation of the source material, Peter's appetite is a strong bellwether for his state of mind. Remember the look Blythe gave him when he turned down a frosted doughnut with hundreds and thousands?

As to Peter passing on the food--it's based on what P_C says in her comment below. It was a trait I'd missed the first time I viewed Blackpool (I was distracted, what can I say?); but it's very much the best guide we get to Peter's state of mind throughout the series. So, yeah--no food means he's very upset indeed.

If he weren't upset, I could envision him loping about the scene, cracking sarcastic quips about it being a shame that no-one thought to bring sticks and marshmallows, or about cooking a late-night snack on the stones. Until the body turned up, of course.

No offense to our hero and heroine, but I think that description of their personal lives probably applied with rather a great deal of validity before they even met.

A BODY!
Indeed. Someone's having fun killing people in Kendal...
Though I must say that even though I felt so awful for Peter in the last chapter and wanted desprately to give him a good scratch behind the ears I'm fighting the urge not to send him a mental slap...
Poor Peter--he's still only hours away from having this huge THING dropped on him, and so still is livingin the heat of the moment; we've had several days to process it and dissect it and determine who's In the Right, and who's In the Wrong. Part of the story, though, is seeing how Peter and Rose work through their issues, and build a relationship.
My mind keeps telling me I love the suspence but I want so badly for them to just shag and be done with it! *grinning sheepishly*
Oh, I'm there with you. I'd love to just wave a wand and have them shagging like bunnies--but I'm forcing myself to work through the process logically and (hopefully) realistically. :)

Oh beautifully done, the phone exchange with Mickey answering it knowing he is going to rain down righteous retribution on poor 'tenacious' Carlisle, then hands the phone off to a gobsmacked Rose. I was cheering, for whom I'm thinking the reader as it was priceless.
Then there are the pep flags spelling out 'Go James', is he the only one that really sees what is going on?
We just have to let things cool before we can carry on. < ooooh, love the freudian slip ( ... )

I'm thinking a 4x4 (thicker than a 2X4) to bring him around.
What both of our protagonists need is a Clue-by-four. ;)
I enjoyed the idea of time dragging out while these two are in such close proximity. I would like to have seen a bit more of Rose's pov, but excellent insight on Peter.
For some reason, I reflexively tend to write much of this story from Peter's perspective. But you're right--what *is* going on in Rose's mind? We'll find out, at least a little bit, in the coming chapters.
Sleep well, and have a good weekend yourself! :)
