Is it Monday yet?

Only...uh...85 or so hours to go!

HA! Wonderful as per usual.

Thank you!

“When’re ye going to marry that woman of yours?” Graeme was leaning back in his seat after supper, a glass of whisky near his right hand.
“Never, if I can help it.” Peter was surprised Graeme had asked the question; the older man was more than familiar with his opinion of marriage.
Peter is not a prophet. ;-)

Graeme laughed, a sound emanating from deep in his belly. “Peter, ye nitwit. Ye hate your job now-how could you be any more miserable?”

Thank you Graeme!!

“I’ve known you years, Peter, and I know you’ve a knack for talking yourself into or out of things, common sense be damned. Why change a lifetime habit? If you really want this, find a way to talk yourself into it, not out of it.”
It's about damn time someone told Peter this! Thank you Graeme part 2.

“I’m in town and thought it might be polite to call.”
“This is Peter Carlisle, right?”
“Shut up.”

God I love these two.

“I, ah, am not quite dressed for that ( ... )

Thank you Graeme!!

Graeme knows Peter too well. *g*

God I love these two.

So do I--and they're *very* easy to write :)

So should we be rereading "A Secret Thing" now or after the next chapter to go with the flow?

Ummmm...it'll probably be easiest to read it before (by the by, I updated "The Order of Things" this morning).

had found that the memories of him and Rose in that place, making love, had made it almost hurt to be there without her
This seems to be happening a lot.

“Never, if I can help it.”
Is he just afraid of marriage? Doesn't he see that it would be different with Rose?

Peter wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Elias had managed to suss the information out somehow.
Probably not. If he knows it's Peter's safe haven, he won't want to intrude on that.

“I…I know the devil in Kendal. I may not like it, but I know it. I’ve no idea what I’d be in for in London.”
That's a good point, but a little risk for the chance things will be a lot better?

But what if I was miserable at work?”
Graeme laughed, a sound emanating from deep in his belly. “Peter, ye nitwit. Ye hate your job now-how could you be any more miserable?”
*snort* I wonder how obvious it is to other people.

He could feel his head growing fuzzy, the effect of the whisky as well as of the Manhattan Graeme had whipped up before dinner. He's not usually much of a drinker, is he ( ... )

I think he is, a little bit. He's not had good personal experiences with it, and it's definitely coloured his perception of the institution--the positive examples of his friends notwithstanding.

He's not usually much of a drinker, is he?

Not usually, no. He'll have a few fingers of whisky if he's in a social setting--or being interrogated by Pete ;)--but he doesn't often let himself get drunk. It's a sign of how much he trusts Graeme that he allows himself to in this chapter.

He knew Peter's mum? Or is this his impression from stuff Peter's said?

Graeme and Eirlys both knew Peter's mum. They bought the land from Peter's grandmother; but they've been in the area for ages, and are old family friends. (the last name of Graeme and Eirlys--assuming I've not already crafted and shared it out, previously--is Muir.)

Has he not come to terms with her death?

There are times--rare, but still there--where he *does* resent her early death.

Is his ( ... )

For some reason, I was picturing them as quite a young couple.

Would Williams let him go, or find a way to sink his request for transfer?
I'd love to know that-- to be rid of him or to spite him, that is the question.

And-the most challenging of all-what would Peter do if he put in for the request, and was denied in the end?
I think that would just crush him. It'd almost be better not to have been offered it than that. But would he decide to go to London working elsewhere, having given the idea so much thought?

Elias had thrown him a lifeline; had McCoy known that, when he’d spoken with Peter two days previous?
I have a hunch he did, though he might not realize just how bad it is.

How had Rose managed, going from the vastness he imagined over his head, to the confines of one planet, fixed in time and space? Would she ever fully accept being trapped where she was?
She hasn't got a choice, so she's made the best of it.

He just wished he could help her come to terms with the life from which she’d been pulled away. And here's the key, really. She isn't Saint Rose, benevolently helping him ( ... )

I think he'd stick it out in Kendal a bit longer--right up until Rose gave him a swift kick in the pants. Then he'd probably look to get out, and do a bit of private work.

Bet the zeppelin operator stayed out of his way.

As did the other passengers. Although one probably recognized him, got a cell phone picture of him dozing, and sold if off to the zanzare ;)

Is Peter that tired? He called him at the station, right?

No--he only has Elias's mobile number programmed into his phone (put there during the time in Glasgow). He probably has Elias's card tucked away in his wallet, though ;)

He means the newspaper or the Internet? Where else would it be?

The job would most likely normally be posted with the other job vacancies on a central page. However, in certain cases--if it's an internal hire, for instance--it might go to a different spot, available only via an intranet or some such.

As Peter watched him walk away, he found that-all claims to the contrary-he truly wanted to work with the Met.
Yay!!! It really is okay to want these things, Peter. And you totally are good enough. I hope, perhaps, you're slowly starting to believe it?

“I’m in town and thought it might be polite to call.” / “This is Peter Carlisle, right?” / “Shut up.” / “Ah, and so it is.”
I just wanna give them both giant bear hugs. I have nothing but love and adoration for Elias (and Ruby).

And I adore Graeme, too. You've surrounded him with such wonderful people. I have to wonder if Peter never even realized how wonderful they all are until Rose came along and helped to start rebuilding his self-worth.

Probably. The clever bastard.
Ha! And that's why they get along so well. Clever Bastards United!

I think this is my favorite chapter so far.

He's getting there.

He's always known Annie, Graeme, and Eirlys are excellent friends. His problem was that his self-esteem was so low, he had a hard time trusting them when they told him he was a good man.

I think this is my favorite chapter so far.

Hurrah!
