I hope they take a good, long time solving this case -- Elias, Ruby and Peter continue to be such a wonderful read. Maybe this won't be their last case together?

The case takes as long as it takes--that's just how these things go! *g*

As to Elias, Peter and Ruby working together again...time will tell.

No one appeared to be terribly interested in their arrival at the apartment block Ruby had occupied
Appearances can be deceiving. I do wonder what some of the residents are thinking.

Peter had learned from Elias, after that visit, that the objects contained film or recordings; Peter had made a remark on the cloak-and-dagger nature of the operation, and had been given a withering glance from Elias in return.
Cloak and dagger? He's seen worse from Torchwood, and Elias probably suspects that.

He’d never really given proper thought to working at Torchwood, to moving down to not only live with Rose but also work with her. He suspected he’d not be able to do it, in truth
He really couldn't. It's too much to ask of Peter to willingly let Rose go into danger. Plus, would he be happy at Torchwood?

Peter glanced back at the room full of equipment. “What about…?” He gestured to the space ( ... )

Oh, nothing charitable towards Ruby, that's for sure.

Plus, would he be happy at Torchwood?

I think Peter would be *miserable*

New type of key? I hope it's good,

It's *very* good.

What, the undercover operative? Sounds standard to me.

It's not strictly the undercover work--it's more a combination of *everything*--how Elias carries himself, how he looks at things, how he and Ruby are interacting when they *are* interacting--as well as a gut feeling.

I'd like to know some of that story, though, and how it's influencing how he works with Peter.

I think I need to get cracking on Elias's backstory...

They already know Peter's good enough-- why doesn't he?

Because he's spent years being told otherwise. There are folks who've told him he's good enough, and smart enough (and gosh darn it, people like him!)--but they kind of get drowned out by all of the negative folks.

I love the mystery in this story. What can I say, I am a pure mystery junkie.

Also, the lack of a phone call disturbs me. It makes me think that something else is going on here. Just not sure what it is yet. Or I could be off in left field, that is possible this morning.

While I was reading I started getting a funny picture in my mind of Rose's team meeting and working with Peter's "team." Could you imagine the awesomeness of that, once Ruby got over what the Vitex heiress really does for a living.

Oh, I friended you fic journal as well, hope that was okay.

Most of my fiction-based reading tends to be mysteries, too ;)

Hee! Remember--Elias doesn't know what Rose really does, either...

Oh, I friended you fic journal as well, hope that was okay.

No worries--I'll be going through and updating my friends list once I've replied to comments.

well, *that* was a nice little 'partners' story... I love the interaction between them and that Peter's really the one to focus the issues in a way that jump starts things... shows himself that he's no hayseed and work out some of his own issues in the process. Good multi-tasker is our Peter :)

“The hotel.” The statement was not followed by “you idiot,” but Elias’s tone of voice indicated he thought it.

oh lucky Elias ! He's gonna have Ruby with him from here on out, and poor Peter... if he doesn't at least *talk* to Rose soon he's going to be insufferably miserable knowing that Elias and Ruby are upstairs together... could even grow a little resentful if Elias comes downstairs every morning as chipper as he was this day.

Peter extended his hand, giving the keys to Elias. “Your turn to drive, then.”
“No argument, Inspector Carlisle?” Elias’s wry tone gave him pause.
“No...should there be?”
“So the mood does wear off by mid-morning?”
Peter made a rude gesture, smiling, and then walked over to the large police vehicle.*g* I love this ( ... )

ASTG: The story of how Peter changed from the ugly duckling to a Swan (who played well with others) ;)

oh lucky Elias ! He's gonna have Ruby with him from here on out,

Yes indeed. Poor lonely Peter--he needs Rose!

Petulant!Peter has both been called-out and wrestled into submission, kind of ;)

Elias has at least *this* mood of Peter's fairly well figured out.

they've already shown that they have an uncanny ability to fill in the holes in theories for each other ... But I can also see why he wouldn't want to put himself in the position of having to work through that initial period - it could mean life or death...

You're even better than you give yourself credit for

That he is. :)
Absolutely. Peter's biggest problem would be, without question, having to do field-work with Rose. She'd kill him for being so protective.

Peter found the bell, ringing it merrily for service;

as someone who has one of those bells on the counter of the cir desk, i can seriously say that that 'ringing the bell merrily' is ANNOYING AS HELL ! we have people who will look you in the eye and ring the bell... or just sit and tap at it til someone appears... or stand and play with it while you're helping them.

They were escorted back to the Doctor’s office, a small white box of a room, complete with diplomas and pictures on the walls, and bookshelves full of books on indecipherable topics.

weren't they in his office the last time they were here ?

“So. He comes up here to open a clinic as a favour. But I though clinics were state-run?”

you've missed the t off the end of the word thought here

Peter leaned back against his seat, feeling like a right failure. Maybe he wasn’t cut out for this sort of work-at least not in a city any larger than Kendal. He wasn’t half as good as he thought he was...

Poor Peter. It doesn't take much for you to doubt yourself... but

D'you really think Peter doesn't know that? ;)

They were not.

no reason to feel guilty for appreciating beauty, Peter.

I think both Loreen *and* Natalie were uncomfortable with him *seeing* that another woman was pretty or beautiful.

It doesn't take much for you to doubt yourself...

Years of negative reinforcement, hard at work.

you've been trapped in that dysfunctional place for so long that you don't know how to take a compliment about your work...

Poor Peter!

well, that was a very satisfying cop procedural...

Hurrah! I'm very glad to hear it :D

I suspect his technique varies between simply leaning on it the entire time he's waiting, ringing it in time with some tune in his head, and for those bells that ring an electronic file of a song, scratching it like a DJ. With or without cheery whistling. XP

And he'd have that beatific smile he dropped on Ripley, that first time they met, the entire time. *g*
