I don't exchange presents with anyone so I thought I'd make myself a reminder list of records I meant to buy this year and didn't and perhaps will in the new year as a present to myself:

  • The Light of the Sun | Jill Scott
  • Stone Rollin' | Raphael Saadiq
  • Night of Hunters | Tori Amos
  • Undun | The Roots
  • Chamber Music Society | Esperanza Spalding

Random albums that I've been enjoying lately:
Blind Faith | Blind Faith - one album band from 1969 consisting of Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. There's also Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs if you feeling like more old blues-rock.
Build A Rocket, Boys! | Elbow - Elbow's latest. They're one of my favorite bands to see live.
Days | Real Estate - white indie boys, so yeah, there's that caveat if you've been getting too much of that, but they're a notch above most.
And the Elephant Is Dancing | Goldspot - LA indie pop group headed by Indian-American Siddhartha Khosla. Found them via their cover of an old Bollywood tune, Ina Mina Dika.
Warm Heart Of Africa | The Very Best - they have a newer album out, but I haven't gotten around to buying it yet.
Thunder, Lightening, Strike | The Go! Team - this is my latest "happy energetic music" for Saturday morning chores or what have you.

And they've disbanded now, but The Lucksmiths are pretty much always in rotation in my household (again, indie white guy band - from

Oh, and there's In Light | Givers - they're a fun young band with a very cool Southern Cajun feel.

Honestly, one of my best finds this year was the soundtrack to the video game Fifa '12. They really raise the bar in terms of pulling together a bunch of diverse international artists just as they're breaking through.

Oh wow, what a great soundtrack. And yes, there's Cut Copy and Foster the People and TV on the Radio (I really should own more of their stuff).

The three things that stay on permanent rotation in my iphone/itunes are Fiona Apple, Tori Amos and Neil Finn/Crowded House. I tend to follow songwriters.

Thanks for all the recs!

Just judging from what you've got here, you might like St. Vincent or Emily Jane White. :)

I can't believe I left out the new St. Vincent! Thanks for reminding me. I really liked Actor a lot.

Shall look up the other name as well!
