That wasn't a criticism of his acting; he was perfectly fine. Or of him as a person, as I follow his twitter and find it very positive and entertaining. I just think that late-first season is far too early to build an entire episode around the emotional arc of a one-shot celebrity guest star. I've only had 20 or so episodes to learn to care about Steve, Danny, Chin and Kono--why throw an episode away on a character who probably isn't going to return for a few seasons if ever? I'd rather have had an episode about Jenna Kaye, who is at least sticking around for a bit, or the governor, or Kamekona, or Rachel and Stan (even though we've had that) or Grace's day at school or that cop cousin of Chin and Kono's that was undercover and got them into that casino. I know the show is doing very well in the ratings, but save the celebrity guest stars with new-album tie-ins for like, the sixth season, and let me continue my love affair with the actual characters on the show.
On this line of thought I have to share my amazement at Bones last night with someone. They basically put on a pilot for some other show. It was crazy. You think it's hard building an emotional arc around a one-shot celebrity guest star, try watching a whole new pilot you're supposed to care about because they occasionally have them talking to the Bones characters!
But you know they used to do that all the time. Remember that episode of the Cosby show that was mysteriously all about I think Ruben Blades as some other doctor?
But yeah I didn't think they did that anymore, haha! So it was really about that guy, how weird!
Glad I wasn't the only one wondering about the little old lady. I told myself that maybe she was getting lessons even though she's passed the test. Since she's a New Yorker she may have only gotten the license to drive to places like Westchester.
I was picturing it that maybe she was a woman who got a license because she drove back and forth into and out of the city, so maybe this was something she had a lot of practice in.
