I'm asking everyone for books or movies about movie making. Can be any period. Mostly I want that sort of behind-the-scenes of a production stuff, preferably Hollywood. Here's my own shortlist, but I'm sure you guys can add to it!

  • What Makes Sammy Run? by Budd Schulberg
  • The Player dir. Robert Altman
  • Singin' in the Rain dir. Stanley Donen and ( Read more... )

Interesting! However, a previous life of mine brushes against that tale a bit too directly, so reading it will probably cause flashbacks!

I recommend
The French Lieutenant's Woman
Hollywood Ending
Swimming With Sharks
and Search and Destroy, if no one's mentioned those yet.

Although it's not centered in the world of movie-making, All About Eve is definitely backstage-y stuff.

Oh, wait a sec. Swimming With Sharks and Search and Destroy are more about the antics involved in raising money to produce a movie, not necessarily about day-to-day life on a film shoot. But The French Lieutenant's Woman and Hollywood Ending should be okay.

Also, there's All That Jazz, which kind of shows what it's like to produce a movie and Broadway show simultaneously.

I LOVE All About Eve, and thankfully own it, so thanks for reminding me about that. All That Jazz should have been on my list already.

Swimming with Sharks is that one where Kevin Spacey is a crazy agent, right? I think anything with that Hollywood behind the scenes flavor will help.

Thanks so much, man!
