Somebody's WRONG on the Internet...

Few things are more incomprehensible than people who argue in favor of flat taxes because they're "fair," "true to the American Dream," or "better fiscal policy".

Three phrases that should alert any sane listener that the guy under the lights has no idea what's good for anyone but himself.

I forget which TV pundit years ago described the "Steve Forbes Flat Tax" as the "Steve Forbes Never Pays Taxes Again Tax" but I thought that pretty much said it all.

The fact that Americans are generally bad at math doesn't help.

It's not that Americans are bad at math, it's that most people have never had marginal tax bracketing explained to them and the newsmedia perpetuates all sorts of ridiculous notions about it (see also ABC's recent nonsense) rather than trying to present progressive taxation as what it is.

I thought the American Dream was something about owning a home and living better than your parents. I guess a flat tax is kind of like that, except for the part where it increases taxes on people with less money and lowers them on people with more money.

Clearly the American Dream is supporting the plutocracy at every possible moment.

this is random, but I never did make it through Lain...Do you recommend it?

Yes, I love it. Beware, many people find it hard to get through. The best statement I can think of of the pitfalls of Lain is the story of what happened when I screened it at CU's Anime Club:
Most people were enjoying it, but alexsirkman had been having a long day or something and ended up falling asleep. He woke up about an episode later but didn't feel like he had been asleep for more than a minute, because what was happening then was oddly similar to when he fell asleep. Lain is rather like that sometimes: lots of repetition and variations on themes.

I've tried to watch it two or three times, but I never made it past the third episode. It was really weird and made me tired....But I keep meaning to watch it because it's so famous.

BoogiePop Phantom is bad for this too, but both are really great shows. Just don't watch either when tired, they take brain power and coffee.

Love Lain and rewatch annually at least, I finally got through BoogiePop after owning it for years.

Sorry, but I'll refrain from the political discussion - enough people want to lynch me already. ;-)
