Two superheroes walk into a bar...

After lunch, some discussion of the overall game plan, and the drive from Kenton to downtown Metropolis, Sand and Trevor finally arrive at Hardware, the bar Corrine had apparently been at the night before.

Since the place was a restaurant as well, the main eatery area was open, but at 3 in the afternoon not particularly busy.  Activity could be seen ( Read more... )

Trevor nods, taking his sunglasses off and tucking them into the breast pocket of his short-sleeve orange plaid dress shirt. He nods toward the lounge area and walks over, taking two stools down from the bar and seating himself patiently. As he wats for their presence to attract attention he pulls his spare phone out of the pocket of his jeans and switches it to silent mode.

A tall, somewhat burly guy in a blue long-sleeved shirt and black tie walks over to Sand and Trevor. "I'm sorry, but the lounge doesn't open until 4. They will serve bottled drinks in the restaurant area, though, if you're looking to start happy hour a bit early."

"Actually, we wanted to talk to someone on staff regarding a client of ours." Sand takes out a wallet and flashes a badge of some sort. Trevor will notice that they're private investigation credentials. "My name is Mr. Hawkins, my associate here is Mr. Cole. We're following up on an incident that occured last night to a Ms. Corrine Bertrand."

"Well, I'm the day manager here. Was she in last night? Kyle, our night manager, doesn't come in until six, but I've got at least one of the bartenders getting ready to open." He turns to the back. "Hey, REGGIE! Can you come out for a second?"

A few seconds later, a tall, well-built gentleman walks out from the kitchen area. "Yeah, what's up, boss?"

It's the man from Corrine's memory.

"These two were in here asking about some lady that was in last night? Was that the one that walked out of here five sheets to the wind?"

"Look, for the last time, I told you that she didn't look that drunk until the last drink I gave her. How was I to know she needed to be cut off?"

He takes off the apron he was wearing and starts walking away. "I don't need this..."

Trevor grins as he looks down at Reggie. A long cab ride, and an even longer night of watching Corrine fade drunkenly in and out of reality, and now he has the cause of it at his feet.

"Good. I was starting to worry that my rep might be suffering." With that Trevor takes Reggie by the front of his shirt, lifting him first to his feet and then several inches off of them before he slams the bartender against the brick wall of the bar.

"Okay" Trevor tells Reggie, staring him in the eyes. "My friend here is going to ask you some questions, and the answers to those questions are going to come out of your mouth. The only variable you control is how much screaming has to come out of your mouth before the answers do."

"Capice?"

Sand walks over to the bartender. "The woman you served drinks to that night. How do you know her?"

"I don't." Reggie spat out. "Two hot brunettes walked up to me, pointed her out in the lounge. They gave me a small bottle of Jack Daniels and said to make sure she got that to drink. I sniffed it, it smelled like Jack, didn't smell anything funny. They gave me ten friggin grand for the privilege. That's four months pay for one night."

The stare Trevor directs up at Reggie is full of skepticism, as well as a nice healthy dose of contempt.

"That didn't strike you as the least bit... I don't know, odd? Two girls walk up and give you ten grand just to give someone a drink that she just happens to order on her own later on?"
