On the front steps of the JSA Brownstone

Sep 08, 2006 23:03

He hasn't removed his trenchcoat yet - I mean, come on, tradition demands he keep the facade up until the last possible moment, and this man is nothing if not a lover of tradition. It's one of the reasons he's here. The JSA are a great tradition. It'll be a privilege to smash their faces in, a privilege to traumatize them ( Read more... )

The blind man hears it first.

He tries to warn everybody with the comm. Unaware it may not work.

"Intruder alert, investigating now."

Skulking in the shadows.

His audio enhancer/detector array - a set of ears that can't be harmed by aural attacks, like for example a sonic cry of some kind, not that we're being specific - picks up Mid-Nite's voice down the hallway, and then the infrared kicks in - yep.

Oh, well, he didn't come here to be subtle -

Encyclopedia salesman!

Turning the corner... he gets his first glimpse of just who this is, and he can feel the blood in his veins freeze instantly.

Prometheus. God help us.

Utterly outmatched by this man, Dr. Mid-Nite can only hope he will have backup soon. In the meantime, he has to keep him busy for as long as possible.

Blackout bombs. A cluster at his chest, a sticky, thick smoke that may obscure his vision with any luck.

Stick and move.

Blackout bombs? Blackout bombs? Not that I don't appreciate you making me a smokescreen.

He advances through the darkness towards Mid-Nite, utterly unfazed by the smoke.

Say, you're her doctor, right?

Ping. Ping. Ping.

Ping. Ping. Ping.

Ping. Ping.

Okay. This is not good.

"Oracle to JSA Brownstone. Please respond."

Definitely not good.

She's been pregnant for nine months. Isn't this when a woman's supposed to give birth?

Maybe a woman not inpregnated by a Kryptonian.

Lois would almost exchange the exhaustion of the last few weeks for the nausea of the first few. At least she could get something done without feeling walking up the stairs was going to require a nap afterwards. And a nap is what she's wanting right now as she heads toward the room that has been her home for some six mo...

What the hell is that noise going on down the hall?

It's bad news.

The fact that her doctor is bleeding from his mouth and walking with a pained, awkward gait, yet walking FAST and DIRECTLY toward her, should give her clue.

No words. Just the practiced hand signal that means Panic Room.

He hurries her along as best he can, short of lifting her up and carrying her. Absolutely NO time to waste.

It's BAD NEWS?

How about entirely shitty news of a profound nature that few people could describe in detail adequate to the task (though she could, albeit with some typos and misspellings)? "Pieter, what the hell--" she begins before stopping and staring.

Panic room?

Lois hurries along beside her doctor and tries not to look like she's about to freak out.

Wisely, it's not far from where she normally sleeps.

She's in, without a word. The door is shut behind her, as quietly as possible, the locks are all activated.

Now, to find out why the rest of the team isn't responding.

And hope to God he lives to find out the answer.

LOIS!!!!!!

The flight from Metropolis to NYC, at top speed, taking other variables into account, takes roughly 10 seconds.

The forcefield flickers one last time and finally disappears entirely. Prometheus pulls forth an odd gunlike laser-emitter of some kind from his cloak.

Nothing personal, Ms. Lane. Just - oh, who am I kidding, I'm gonna ice Superman's kid, this is fun.

He levels it at her and squeezes the trigger.

Superman was feeling the pain he was in, but at this point he had been holding Lois up. The fear and frustration on her face was palpable, as having a stomach the size of a small watermelon didn't exactly make feats of derring do particularly easy.

However, he had managed to get Lois safely...somewhere. He was wondering when the hell backup was getting here.

He made his way to the edge of the parking garage, heading toward the exit.

Out to the sunshiney day outside.

Sunshine. It's like Popeye's spinach for the Man of Steel. Lois squints skyward and asks for the hundredth time, "Are you okay?"

Superman shakes his head. "Have to be. Now go."

The tone he speaks isn't that of a loving husband, but that of the most powerful being on the planet. Completely non-negotiable.

They had something of a plan.

In public, with a supervillain running around, she can't say what she wants, do what she wants, so all Lois can manage is, "Be careful," before she does as directed. Superman IS the most powerful being on the planet, after all.
