AFIS is a Godsend to police detectives who have fingeerprints to go off of. The problem is that the system can be a harsh mistress. If all you have is a partial, you can have a print for years, rotate it little by little, move it around, and still not get a hit even if the perp is in the system. You still have to try though. Leaning across the desk, Crispus reaches for a pack of cigarettes and his lighter, drawing out one slender roll of tobacco, tapping the filter against the desk's marred surface. Casting a withering glance at the AFIS monitor, Allen flicks the lighter on, the small, orange flame snapping to life as he sets the cigarette between his lips, drawing on the filter until the end begins to glow. Blowing out a thin stream of gray smoke toward the ceiling, Crispus shifts a bit in his seat, regarding the computer ( ... )

If the limo's tests and Nora's report were any indication, Nara Zeus did not go quietly into that long goodnight. Sadly for police, this is normally good. If the victim can pry something off the perp, then there's something forensics can test. In this case though, it becomes pretty clear after a bit that whoever did this knew what the police would do and in what order. Everything was bleached down and wiped down. They were lucky to get the two partials they got.

Now it was time just to keep moving them around the scanner so maybe the unimaginative computer could scan it and, if the perp had ever been fingerprinted, find that match.

Crossing one leg over the other, Allen balances the folder against his thigh, lifting his hand and running it over his closely shaved head, the frown on his face deepening as his dark eyes run over the victim list. Cris puts the cigarette to his lips again, drawing from it, the cherry glowing brighter as he does so. Exhaling through his nostrils, Allen looks over at the AFIS and scowls. The scan was finished and a pop-up notice on the screen indicated that, yet again, the machine had found no match in its database. That didn't mean that it wouldn't ever find a match, of course; it just meant that he would have to tweak the scan's orientation and position a fraction one way or the other in the futile hope that he would get a match on a subsequent analysis ( ... )

And sometimes, the magic works.

A blue pop up window comes up - MATCH FOUND! The exclaimation point must have been added by someone with a sense for cold cases.
