Mary is out of the sling, getting a vocabulary lesson. "That's the grass. Grass is green. And those are trees. Yes, we've established that that's my nose. Could you let go, please? Thank you."

Dick lies back and watches them for a minute or two. He can't remember the last time Babs got to relax like this - and she looks so happy about it, too; instead of him having to drag her away from the keyboard protesting.

"Will you share a goldfish with your grumpy old grandfather?" He cups his hand before her, watching.

She gives him a long look. She looks at his hand. Looks at the goldfish. Looks at him again. Then places it in his hand. Before he can close his fingers around the cracker, she reaches out and snags it back. "Gowfiss!"

He laughs.

She's still working on the concept of sharing. Yesterday she brought me three board books, a magazine, two ethernet cables and the cat's favorite toy. Then took each of them back.

"Ethernet cables!" He glances over his shoulder at Barbara. "You're starting her young."

"Ask Dick to tell you when he started demonstrating somersaults for her."

Jim looks to his son-in-law expectantly. This is one story he definitely wants to hear.

His eyebrows shoot up into his hairline as he realizes the attention is now on him.

What? I propped her up with a bunch of pillows on the bed...

He has to pause to deflect a cheesey cracker from being shoved up his nose.

"Parents are the best entertainment a child could have," he comments knowingly. With a half smirk, he adds, "Just ask Barbara."

Babs busies herself with a drumstick.

"Being kind to your old man? I remember more than a few times making a fool out of myself." Raising Barbara were some of the best years of his life. "I made you laugh every time though."

She looks up, and even someone who didn't know her would be able to interpret the way she looks at her father. "Other than a few years during my terrible teens, yeah," she teases.

"We won't count those," he replies with a wink.

He turns once again to Mary. "What can Grandpa teach you? I don't know much about computers. And somersaults are out of my expertise."

Babs looks at her husband. "Well, along with her dad, you can teach her what it means to be a good person."

The baby brandishes another cracker at the older man triumphantly. Dick returns his wife's look. Part of him hopes their daughter won't feel like she has to follow in their footsteps.

There's nothing more valuable than a healthy work ethic.

Jim almost chuckles. They're talking about attributes learned over a lifetime. He had something entirely else in mind. "What can I teach her right now?"

The cracker Mary is waving in her hand slams down into his palm. "How about high fives? Every kid should know how to do a high five. I think I might even be qualified."
